When do the official invitations go out for the PG National Showcase in Minneapolis in June? Do you go right down the top 200 Ranked Players or is there another criteria also used? I noticed the past few years that players ranked well into the 200's and even early 300's showed as attending the PG National event so I am attempting to see if my son has done enough thus far to get asked . . . thanks.

The goal is to have the best 200-250 players in the class plus a very small number of top underclassmen. Of course, we have to take positions into account when we invite players, but not in the rankings. Perhaps the best way to check the criteria out is by looking at past PG National Showcases. This research will give people an idea of who attends by looking at the past players and the results. With enough research you can also find out which players received invites from the various Sunshine Classic events.
Each year we leave many openings for the top players to be invited from the Sunshine events. The Sunshine Classics have produced a lot of outstanding players over the years. Andrew Miller, Jason Stoeffel, Gerritt Cole, etc.
Last year there were about 40 players who made the National from the Sunshine Showcases. Some of those Sunshine players also have become Aflac All Americans.
Cannon,
We are simply looking for those players we feel will end up being the best. Most will obviously be highly recruited by the top college programs or become very good draft picks. If a person looks at the past they will find that we have not been perfect, but we have been pretty darn close on most of the players. We do try hard to be perfect when it comes to the very best players.
We do use our list to a degree, but we know that the list tends to change a lot from January to June. Often we find players who we didn’t know enough about when the first wave of invitations went out. So we do the invitations in small bunches. Not many have ever turned down the invitation, so that allows us to be very selective.
We also leave plenty of room for the top players from the Sunshine events. Often we select a player who is not yet showing up as ranked real high. That happens because we have yet to change the rankings. Anyway, the national invitation list is not identical to the ranking list. Sometimes there’s something that interests us enough about a player ranked in the top 500 that we invite him. Often we don’t invite a player ranked in the top 200. There will usually be players invited that aren’t even mentioned in the current ranking list. After the National the rankings change dramatically to coincide with what we see there.
Every so often, a top player can not make it to the National. This happened to Jarrod Parker who became a first round pick. He was scheduled to attend the National that year but his Indiana High School team was playing in the state championship so he couldn’t make it.
Most players that we feel could be among the top players in the country but we are not sure about… end up making it through the Sunshine events. To directly answer your question… Some of the invites have gone out and most all of those players have already signed up to attend. However, there will be many more sent out over the next two or three months.
So that everyone understands, every year we miss a few players who would have been invited had we known about them earlier. Then again, the results from the National speak for themselves and stand alone. The rosters are always loaded with the top prospects in the country. That is always the goal! Posts:
